Clocking a computer is simply adjusting the Clock Speed, in computer science clock speed refers to clock rate at which microprocessor executes instructions. Every CPU contains an internal clock that regulates the rate at which instructions are executed. The CPU requires a fixed number of clock ticks to execute each instruction. Clock speed measures the rate which a computer can give instructions. Faster the clock is, the more instructions can be executed by computer. Let me take an Example, An Intel 80286 microprocessor requires 20cyles to perform a calculation while more advanced processor such i5 completes this process in just one cycle. Similarly, a CPU with a 32-bit processor will work more faster than a CPU with a 16-bit bus.

Clock speed is usually measured in MHz (megahertz, or millions of pulses per second) or GHz (gigahertz, or billions of pulses per second).Clock speed is increasing every year. In 90’s 4.77 MHz was commonly found in computers using Intel 8088.

Overclocking and Underclocking

Overclocking is the method of configuring components of CPU or GPU to get extra utility from the device more than it was designed to. Increasing a component’s clock rate causes it to perform more operations per second as we discussed earlier. Process of overclocking also undertakes the other components such as RAM into the process whcih results into heating of the device. Excessive Clocking a computer can be detrimental for your device. As a result, After overclocking a device we need extra cooling to the components such as Water cooling or increasing amount of fans if possible.

Method of Overclocking – It is a kind of force applied to computers by increasing clock rate or multiplier in the computer’s BIOS which forces the computer to perform more operations. All computers have different methods of overclocking so we can’t explain each procedure but you can apply below one.

Process of overclocking

  1. First, Go to BIOS and increase the CPU clock rate and/or voltage
  2. Increase by small amount as it may destroy your device
  3. Second, boot your device
  4. To see if your computer is stabe use Prime95 to simulate heavy use and to monitor your computer’s temperature.
  5. Finally if it is stable and your computer is capable enough to overcome with heat and force increase more clock speed.

Underclocking – The process of underclocking is degrading the clock speed or to set lower clock speed than it is specified. There are many benefits of underclocking such as increasing battery life, reducing power and reduce heat emission. Many companies use clocking stabilizer to deliver good battery life and performance to their device.
